2 brgys eyed for urban organic agriculture
THE Davao City Agriculturist Office has identified two barangays that will be developed as the model for sustainable community-based urban organic agriculture.
CAO head Leo Brian Leuterio, during the flag ceremony yesterday, said that Barangay Cabantian and Barangay Bago Aplaya are selected as recipients of planting materials for the development of community-based urban organic agriculture.
“Naa ni silay existing nurseries na atong ginadevelop right now para mahimo silag model sa sustainable community based urban organic agriculture. So hopefully, planting will start this immediately, by January or February we can visit their nurseries and start the harvest,” Leuterio said, adding that all the other barangays will be invited for the relaunch as well.
He added that the city will work in partnership with Davao Urban Farmers Practitioners Association to introduce technology and innovation.
“With this program we are trying to address issues on malnutrition, solid waste and management,” he said, adding that hopefully with good set up this can also boost agri tourism.
“All in all our aim is to guarantee food safety and environment safety,” he said.
Leuterio said that Davao City has an ongoing but not properly launched community-based urban organic agriculture program so yesterday’s event can be considered as the formal launching.
He said that Davao City Mayor Sara Z. DuterteCarpio aims for all barangays to resort into urban organic farming.
Leuterio said that the plan is to put up modern urban agriculture in three congresional districts of
Davao so that they can influence other barangays as they see the benefit and advantages on how it is going to be done.
This month also marks the celebration of first organic agriculture month celebrated within the city and a series of activities are prepared this month to deepen the public and farmers’ understanding on organic agriculture. KVC (For full story visit www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/)
