City to send team to Japan for waste- to- energy tour
A delegation from the Davao City government and environment groups will fly to Japan on Sunday, November 26, for a one- week observation on Japanese implementation of Waste- to- Energy and study its viability when applied in the city.
Interface Development Interventions ( Idis), acting executive director Chinkee Goll said yesterday during the Kapehan sa Dabaw at The Annex SM City Davao, that they have already recommended two environmental experts in WTE to go along with the city officials on their trip to Japan.
Golle said that Davao City Mayor Sara DuterteCarpio who they can recommend that has knowledge on WTE system and they nominated Dr. Jorge Emmanuel, a scientist of the Department of Science and Technology ( Dost) based at the Silliman Uni- versity in Dumaguete City.
She said that Emmanuel is a United Nation ( UN) expert and has involvement in the World Health Organization ( WHO). He led the assessment of WTE projects in the world and he is aware on its impact in other countries.
Dr. Doris Montecastro, a chemist and chair of the Environmental Science Department of Ateneo de Davao University ( Addu),
will also join the team. Montecastro, during learning sessions, had apprehensions on WTE but she is willing to see for herself the technology being used in Japan for WTE.
They will represent the Ecowaste Coalition and Sustainable Davao Movement.
She added that from the city, she is certain that Davao City Environment and Natural Resources Office ( Cenro) head Engineer Marivic Reye will also join the delegation. Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte- Carpio may also be joining.
Golle said that ever since, they have been opposing the WTE system because they believe that there are other options.
The city government of Davao was invited by the Kitakyushu City government to witness and check out the latter's WTE technology and their other best environmental practices concerning solid waste management.
The visit to Kitakyushu is slated November 26 to December 2. JCR
