DCWD conducts citywide quiz contest for students
IN line with the celebration of November as Water Consciousness Month, Davao City Water District (DCWD) conducted the 3rd Science and Math Quiz for Grades 4 to 6 and Junior High School students from public and private schools all over Davao City on November 17, 2017 at the Davao City Recreation Center.
Conducted in partnership with the City Government of Davao, the competition was participated in by 40 schools for the Elementary level, which was held in the morning and by 37 schools for the Junior High School level.
The Quiz tested students’ knowledge on categories involving water namely, Water Properties, Earth’s Water, Science of Water, History of Drinking Water, and Computation. The coverage also included Laws and Jurisprudence of Water Districts in the Philippines.
Prior to the competition proper, DCWD together with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Department of Education (DepEd) evaluated all the questions to ensure their accuracy and appropriateness for the participants. The evaluators who also served as contest judges were Dr. Lanie Marie D. Gella and Dr. Rogelio A. Rodel for the Elementary and Renier John P. Cagurol and Vilma E. Tanjay for the Secondary Quiz all representing Department of Education. Engineer Howell Adrian A. Ong from DOST completed the Board of Evaluators for both levels.
Among the 40 contingents for Elementary, Rikka Lynel L. Gocon from Cornelio Reta Elementary School emerged as the smartest and was declared as the champion. Her runner ups were Rod Vaughn B. Quinto of Davao City Special School and Mary Danielle M. Lavalle of Christian Colleges of Southeast Asia. This year marks Cornelio Reta Elementary School’s back-to-back win in DCWD’s Science and Math Quiz.
The High School category was a fight for championship between Holy Cross of Davao College’s Shabby Hyacinth I. Sarmiento and Philippine Science High School’s Anne Felize P. Padillo where the former was declared as the champion. In third place was Colegio de San Ignacio’s Kristian Karl O. Gonzales. The winners for both levels received cash prizes, plaques, and IEC materials while all participants, coaches, and schools were awarded with certificates and IEC materials.
Adding to the esteem of being hailed as champion is the opportunity for the winners in both levels to represent Davao City in the regional competitions among water districts to be organized by the Southern and Central Mindanao Water Information Council in 2018 and a chance to compete in the national competition during the 39th Philippine Association of Water Districts convention.
