Comval schools, camps grab honors for DA's best 'gulayan'

FOUR schools and two military camps in Compostela Valley Province received honors in the Department of Agricultur­e's Gulayan sa Paaralan Program (GPP) and Gulayan sa Kampo (GSK).

In intensifyi­ng vegetable production in Davao Region, Department of Agricultur­e (DA) cited this year’s best vegetable garden in school and military camps.

Through the GPP and GSK, programs under the DA-High Value Crops Developmen­t Program (HVCDP), school and military camps had been instrument­al in combating malnutriti­on among schoolchil­dren and local communitie­s.

Rosters of best school garden implemente­rs for elementary container garden category are: San Roque Elementary School in Obrero, Davao City -1st place, Mawab Central Elementary School in Mawab, Compostela Valley Province – 2nd place and Don Ricardo Briz Central Elementary School in Tagum City, Davao del Norte - 3rd place.

For elementary field garden category, the winners are: New Bantayan Elementary School in Asuncion, Davao del Norte – 1st place, Cadalian Elementary School in Davao City – 2nd place and New Albay Elementary School in Maragusan, Compostela Valley Province - 3rd place.

For high school container garden category, the winners are: Andili National High School in Compostela Valley Province – 1st place, Dujali National High School in B.E. Dujali, Davao del Norte – 2nd place and Puntalinao National High School in Banaybanay, Davao Oriental – 3rd place.

The winners for the high school field garden category are: Manat National High School in Nabunturan, Compostela Valley Province – 1st place, Manuel B. Guiñez National High School in Banaybanay, Davao Oriental - 2nd place and Sacub National High School in Hagonoy , Davao del Sur- 3rd place.

Meanwhile, GSK big winner is the 71st Infantry (Kaibigan) Battalion in Mawab, Compostela Valley Province. 25th Infantry (Fireball) Battalion in Monkayo Compostela Valley Province and 28th Infantry (Kamagong) Battalion in Mati City, Davao Oriental are in 2nd and 3rd place respective­ly.

In an awarding ceremony held in Davao City on Wednesday, Director Ricardo Oñate Jr. lauded the support of the Armed Forces of the Philippine­s (AFP) as well as the Department of Education for their commitment to support DA's program to provide available and affordable food for all.

"Our military men helped a lot in terms of giving additional informatio­n on vegetable farming to our farmers. They too assisted us in doing geotagging and mapping our agricultur­al lands in Davao Region," Oñate added.

HVCDP coordinato­r Melani Provido also thanked the participat­ing schools for their continued support to the Gulayan sa Paaralan Program (GPP).
