City boxing coach seeks support for training

- By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan

WITH seven Davao City boxers advancing to the quarterfinals and semifinals of the PSCPacquiao Cup Amateur Boxing Cup, team head coach Librado Sagarino, Jr. is seeking support for their training.

The quarterfinals is slated February 10 and 11, 2018 in Kidapawan City while the semifinals is on MarcH 3, 2018 in Cagayan de Oro City.

"Pag sakto ang training, dako akong salig nga makalusot ning unom sa semis og ang isa. Problema lang jud namo run kay kung mag regular training mi unsa may ipakaon namo sa mga bata pagkahuman. Ungta masuportahan mi sa training sa mga bata (With sufficient training, I am confident the six boxers will make it to the sefinals. Our concern now is how to feed them after every training. I hope we can get help for the boxers' training)," Sagarino said considering their lack of resources.

The self-financed Davao City team went to General Santos City over the weekend for the Mindanao Preliminaries that served as the launching of the nationwide grassroos amateur boxing program of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and Philippine Sports Institute (PSI) with Senator Manny Pacquiao. The coaches, parents and few teachers of the boxers pooled their resources together for the team to make the General Santos City trip.

Sagarino's other concern is where to hold the training since the boxing facility at the back of the Davao City Recreation Center (DCRC) or Almendras Gym had been closed for quite sometime.

Sagarino said that the boxers just usually jog around People's Park during weekends and that they have no permanent gym to do weights training.

"Sa mga balay sa coaches o sa boxers usahay ga-training kay naa man gamit maski papaano. Lisod sad kay lagyo mga balay sa boxers dunay taga Marilog naa pud taga Buhangin. Bantug na kung magtapok mi sa People's Park nalang, gastos pud sa pamasahe (Training is also done in coaches' houses where there are equipment that boxers can use. It is challenging though because some boxers live in Marilog and others in Buhangin so we usually meet up for jogging at People's Park and they spend much for fares)," the head coach said, adding that if only the city government of Davao can provide a training gym for athletes like boxers, it would be a great help for them

Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office (SDD-CMO) officer-in-charge Mikey Aportadera, in a phone interview, said Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio has plans for the DCRC Compound and the boxing gym might be rehabilitated for the preparation of city athletes competing in the Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet that will be held here in February next year.

Aportadera said, "Definitely irevive nato ang boxing. Mag-host man sab ta next year sa PSCPacquiao Cup. Naay plano ang city para sa boxing gym (We will definitely revive boxing. We will host one leg of the PSCPacquiao Cup. The city government has plans on the boxing gym)."

Davao City will host the Mindanao Finals of the PSC-Pacquiao Cup where all medalists will advance to the national championship.

Meanwhile, youth boys light flyweights Ariel Almamento of General Santos City and Jake Sone Saludar of Polomolok, South Cotabato; youth boys flyweights Arceboy Baranggan of Barangay Aglayan, Malaybalay, Bukidnon, John Ignatius Macas of Cagayan de Oro City and Criz Sander Laurente of General Santos City and youth boys bantamweight Remark Brillo of Sultan Kudarat Province also advanced to the quarterfinals after beating their respective opponents in the Mindanao Preliminaries held Sunday at the Robinsons Place.
