Magbanua defends 12-U chess title

DABAWENYO chess star Wesley Jovan Magbanua defended the 12-year-old and under title while Philgymn Villajuan, Jun Batucan and Jay Bulicatin ruled their respective categories at the close of the 5th Daliao SK Chess Tournament held Barangay Daliao Covered Court in Toril, Davao City over the weekend.

Magbanua, a 12-year-old scholar of Jose Maria College (JMC), tallied a total of 5.5 points in the six-round Swiss System Format event to beat five-pointers Ryan Gabriel Rasay, Marv Denzel Rubio and 4.5-pointer Jerome Pullos who placed second, third and fourth, respective­ly.

The champion received P3,000 and a medal while the next three placers received P1,500, P800 and P200.

Nathalie Liscano, for her part, was awarded as the best female and romped away with P500 and a medal.

Rounding up the top 10 were Gabriel John Umayan (fourth), Liene Faith Salajudin (fifth), James Catayas (sixth,) Jan Chelsea Mendoza (seventh), Arfred Nathaniel Sanchez (eighth), Jude Emmanuel Corage (ninth) and Michaela Sumaylo (10th) while Nathalie Liscano romped away with the best female award and P500.

Villajuan, meanwhile, scored perfect six points to rule the 16-under crown over Irish Yngayo (5.0), Japeth Aaron Caresosa (4.5) and Lance Kheniel Manalo (4.0).

Villajuna took home P5,000 while the next three winners pocketed P2,500, P1,000 and P300 with medals. Lorranie Yngayo was best female awardee and claimed P800 and a medal.

Bulicatin shared the limelight as he copped the 30-below title over Jimzon Trangia (5.0), Jon Christian Lesaca (4.5), Marcelo Lagura (4.5) and Meguel Jorgio (4.5) who grabbed the next four spots.

Bulicatin brought with him the P8,000 champion purse and a medal while Trangia, Lesaca, Lagura and Jorgio got P4,000, P2,000, P500 and P500, respective­ly.

Batucan captured the seniors title with five points. He outclassed Raymond Pantalita, Boy Literatus and Randil Villajuan who scored an identical four points. Batucan had P3,000 and a medal while the next three placers received P1,500, P800 and P200.
