City government urged to create envi museum
A Davao-based environment group recommended to the city government of Davao the establishment of an Environment Museum, similar to the Kitakyushu, Japan, where best practices and programs of the city in sustaining the environment will be housed in one setting to promote it as a sustainable city.
Chinkie Pelino-Golle, executive director of Interface Development Interventions (Idis), said yesterday that the idea was one of the recommendations of Dr. Jorge Emmanuel, a scientist of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) based at the Silliman University in Dumaguete City, who went to Japan along with other officials and environment advocates.
Through this, locals and visitors alike could have a glimpse on the environmental initiatives of the city amid the booming economy it currently enjoys.
“We are proud that Davao City is a green city, a sustainable city but at the same time we have to
showcase, we have to promote all of that environmental initiatives and I think one of it is the establishments of Environment Museum,” Golle said.
Golle said that Dr. Emmanuel suggested the replication of The Kitakyushu Environment Museum which showcased how the city struggled to overcome pollution and environmentrelated problems confronting their town and actions taken to resolve it towards becoming an eco-friendly city.
Golle said that former Davao City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) head Eliza Madrazo has a plan to put up such similar to the Subangan Museum in Davao Oriental.
“The environment museum naa dira unsay mga species nga located lang sa Davao City, katong mga threatened, ug mga gina-improve nato diha sa city and the best environmental practices, dapat masulod pod na sa Museum (Local species found in Davao City will be found in the environment museum, the city’s best environment practices should also be included),” she said.
The recommendation of Dr. Emmanuel is in a 42-page report submitted to Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio and they are just currently waiting for her response or feedback regarding it.
The report also includes programs for the solid waste management and the contentious waste to energy project.
