The fake Noel

-

LAST Christmas season we were treated to traditional carols such as “the First Noel”. Maybe the opposition had a Christmas hangover and so they assembled a chorus to sing an entirely different song, “The Fake No-EL”, meant to sow confusion and discredit moves to change the charter for a shift to a federal form of government.

Fake, because they tried to make it appear the possible no elections scenario in May 2019 would affect all elective positions when Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez clearly proposed would only concern senators whose term was expiring that year and up for re-election, and that the polls could push through for other elective posts.

Fake, because the critics of the administration even went as far as warning that it might be a ploy to extend the term of Pres. Duterte, despite his crystal clear declaration that he would not remain a minute longer in his office after his term ends.

Fake, because they are claiming to be speaking against the proposed charter change to protect the interest of the Filipino people.

They are more likely doing it to protect their own political agenda because they are employing subterfuge instead of addressing the issues squarely and objectively.

They must have cranked their propaganda machine and made sure their dire warnings are blasted in the media. Even some members of the clergy bought their line of argument.

Lest we be misled, let us remember that Pres. Duterte ran on a platform that included a shift to a federal form of government. He received an overwhelming mandate from the Filipino people.

In pushing for charter change for a shift to a federal form of government, Duterte and his allies are only honoring this sacred covenant.

And this is a fact, not fake.
