The realities of being a weekend warrior

- BY PATRICIA PALILEO

In defense of my biography re: weekend warriors, CC: Parents. There is a lot of stigma going on around weekend warriors. It’s a lifestyle that is not appreciated by our older contemporaries.

Why can’t I have fun after a long week of incredible hard work?

My mom thinks weekend warriors are spoiled millennials who think they can go wherever they want, do whatever they want, and end up spending all their halfmonth’s pay in one weekend.

This is not entirely true and IT’S NOT OK to stereotype millennials, mom. For the record, I do not spend all my money in one weekend. I make sure I still have some left for the next weekend!

So, what exactly is a weekend warrior anyway?

A very specific but informal definition from Urban Dictionary states that weekend warriors are people with jobs during the week and only enjoy life on the weekends.

“A weekend warrior is a person who holds a regular job during the week which restricts their ability to party, go on trips or partake in awesome activities, and thus plans epic weekend adventures to compensate. As much variation and quantity of awesomeness is packed into the weekends as physically possible, warranting the rest of the work week to recharge for the next weekend.”

This is exactly how one would imagine a weekend warrior would be but again, this is not entirely true. I have a week job but I don’t really spend my workdays moping and waiting for the next weekend.

In fact, I actually value my work. It took me a long time to accept the responsibility but the challenges that I have experienced in the corporate world have made me the open-minded person that I am today.

Anyway, there is nothing wrong with having too much fun on a weekend. Just make sure to not overdo it. Keep in mind, that spending so much energy into a day or two is not always the ideal way to have fun. If you have commitments on a Monday, you might feel burnt out from having all the physical activity or mental energy depleted. You won’t be able to function properly anymore.

I guess what I’m trying to say is you can go crazy but do it wisely and with good intention.

There are other alternatives of having fun on weekends – ones that do not involve too much action or spending money. Sometimes, being a couch potato is fun too. You can go read a book, Netflix and chill or just sleep all day.

But I spend my weekends discovering new places and exploring beauty, food, and culture out there. // Insert more punch lines or interesting facts of what makes you a weekend warrior.// That makes me a weekend warrior! And what a better way to treasure these weekend escapades by writing about my adventures with my fellow kids in my blog!
