Embracing the friendzone

- By Reuel John F. Lumawag RJL

THE friendzone. It is that zone when your crush or the person you are attempting to court or seduce simply considers you as a friend and verbally confirms.

To some of us, this is not a position we want to be in. The younger me would post about it on social media. However, as I grew older, I made some realizations.

The friendzone is not a place that we should feel sad about. Though at first it may discourage you as a suitor or for someone looking for a relationship, in the end we have to accept the fact that we may not be the one for that person. Hence, we should embrace this "zone" and look at it at another angle.

A zone to develop yourself

Think of the friendzone as a place where you reasses yourself. While you are in the zone and not eyeing someone else, see if there is anything you need to improve within yourself like your character or getting rid of certain vices. We can use our time in the zone to improve ourselves and probably become the Mr. Right or Ms. Right of someone who is truly meant for us.

A zone to get to know the person

Maybe it is not the time for the two of you yet. Instead of whining about being placed in the friendzone, take the opportunity to get to know the person more. What are their likes or dislikes? What are their hobbies? What do they love to eat? Along the way, you will be able to appreciate the person more not just as a potential partner for life but also as a friend.

A zone to simply wait for the right person

Finding the right person for yourself takes a lot of patience. The person who friendzoned you may not be the right person and the two of you will just remain friends for life. The right person will come to you at the right time.

The friendzone may not sound so good. But when you look at it at a different angle, it is actually a place where you can reflect and improve yourself to also become the right person for the one who has been destined for you. Lastly, don't rush things and wait patiently. A great reward comes to those who wait.
