Davao City rules secondary tennis
DAVAO City Durians captured the secondary boys and girls tennis team gold medals Tuesday afternoon after beating their respective rivals in the ongoing Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet 2018 at the GSIS Heights Tennis Club courts in Matina, Davao City.
Davao City netters defeated Digos City Trekkers, 2-0, in their boys finals.
Davao's Earl Jan Casal overwhelmed Digos bet Jyle Cyril Martinez, 4-1, (retire) in first single match while Dabawenyos John Roddick Litang and Lawrence Paul Colina combined forces to beat Valen Victorio and Denzel Rafael Dizon of Digos, 8-6, in their doubles encounter.
The Grelie Mae Catamco-coached champion boys team was also bannered by rated age-group player John David Velez.
In the distaff side, Davao City Durians also swept Mati City, 2-0, to defend its title.
Multi-titled Danna Mariella Abad whipped Jonamil Prado, 8-1, in the first single.
Davao's Winona Cabardo paired with Theresa Claire Nacito Marionne Debrey Loon to thrash Maria Theresa Bestes and Marionne Debrey Loon, 8-2, in doubles.
The secondary girls team, mentored by veteran Marivic Salvador, was also bannered by Jessica Mae Carcueva.
Salvador, in an interview, said: "We are the defending champions. Mga palaro players ang Davao Durians, two are new players in secondary level pero mga maayo na (but they are already good)."
She added that the girls and three of the boys team are training with the Philippine Tennis Academy five times a week.
