- By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan

DAVAO City's Emmanuel Canubas survived past his opponent Friday afternoon to book a seat in the finals of the Batang Pinoy Mindanao Leg boxing competition at the Provincial Capitol in Oroquieta City.

But his teammates Cyril Ivan Revilla and Chad Andrey Fornes were eliminated in the semifinals to settle for bronzes instead.

Canubas eked out a unanimous decision win over John Jelord Bejasa of Koronadal City, 5-0, in their junior boys pinweight division.

Judges Rolando Jose, Alvin Azucena and Ricardo Olmedo both scored the bout 30-27 in favor of the Dabawenyo as Michael Lyndon Monton and (30-26) and Ange- lo Baguio (30-25) also picked Canubas.

Revilla, however, bowed to Iligan City's Philip John Billones via unanimous decision, 0-5. Judges favored Billones 29-27, 30-26, 29-26, 3026, 30-26 in their junior boys flyweight clash.

Chad Andrey Fornes also succumbed to John Dave Villarde of South Cotabato on the same note in their junior boys bantamweight semifinals encounter.

Davao City assistant coach Librado Sagarino, Jr., said, "Wala man sa nagkulang ang atong mga boxers, pirting kusuga ra jud sa ilang nakaatbang (Not that our boxers lacked anything, they wer just up against stronger ones)." He also said that Billones and Villarde are veterans in amateur boxing.

"Nag-Palarong Pambansa or Batang Pinoy nationals naman gud na sila, mga beterano najud (They have either campaigned in the Palarong Pambansa and Batang Pinoy nationals, they are seasoned boxers already)," Sagarino said.

He added that Reymund Albuperas, the Davraa Meet 2018 elementary boys division best boxer, will fight for a finals spot as of yesterday presstime.

Sagarino also said Albuperas had already defeated his Batang Pinoy semifinals opponent in the PSC-Pacquiao Boxing Mindanao finals held in Kidapawan City.

"Pero dili lang sya magkumpyansa kay dulaon pa bya (Albuperas should not be complacent as the bout is yet to be played)," the coach said.

Two other Davao City boxers also advanced to the semifinals.
