Golden finishes
Davao's Tuba, Mendiola rule athletics events
DAVAO City continued to harvest gold medals in the ongoing Batang Pinoy Mindanao Leg athletics competition with Bernadette Mendiola and Reza Tuba topping their respective events at the Misamis Occidental Provincial Athletics Center (Mopac) in Oroquieta City.
Mendiola registered 1.38 meters to annex the girls 13-15 high jump gold, sharing it with Rona Bacus of Cagayan de Oro City and Xylean Gayle Mariano of South Cotabato who also made the same height.
Davraa Meet 2018 multiple gold medalist Reza Tuba of Marilog National High School, meanwhile, captured the girls 13-15 800-meter run gold with a time of two minutes and 27.3 seconds. Annie Mary Depone of Sto. Tomas, Davao del Norte and Muerphy Dale Nanggan of Davao del Norte got the silver and bronze, respectively. Depone clocked 2:30.20 while Nanggan finished in 2:35.7.
Tuba earlier settled for a silver in girls 1,500m when she placed second to teammate Andrea de Guia who already has collected three golds so far in the Batang Pinoy regional qualifying for the national championships set in Baguio City in September.
She, however, failed to surpass her 2:24.19 record in the recently-concluded Davraa Meet 2018 in Davao City.
The 15-year-old Dabawenya, the youngest among 14 siblings, earlier expressed confidence to win the gold in 800m.
She also said, "Excited na kaayo ko kay makaBaguio najud ko, wala pa ko kaadto og Baguio (I'm excited to go to Baguio because I had never been there)."
She was set to play in the relay events along with De Guia and two other teammates as of yesterday presstime.
In other events, Renante Catayas of Sindangan bagged the boys 13-15 javelin throw gold while Peterson Laparan of Plaridel, Misamis Occidental governed the boys 110m hurdles and Jose Acuram of Pagadian City snatched the boys 400m hurdles gold.
Mati City's Mary Joy Tero stamped her rivals in girls 400m hurdles as Kyle Brea Degino emerged champion in girls javelin throw event. DAVAO SPORTSWRITERS ASSOCIATION
