IBP Davao mum on Addu

- By Ivy C. Tejano

THE Integrated Bar of the Philippines in Davao City (IBP-Davao) refused to comment on the allegations hurled against the head of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Davao Region for issuing an intimidating statement against a professor of the Ateneo de Davao University (Addu).

Comelec-Davao regional director lawyer Remlane Tambuang was lately put in a hot seat after he allegedly threatened the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) Dean’s Office—Dean Reynante Pilapil and Assistant Dean Nelly Limbadan—of the Addu two weeks ago, which he fervently denied.

IBP-Davao City Chapter president lawyer Rogelio Largo said members of the office opted not to make any statement on what happened between Tambuang and the teachers of Addu. He added that they respect the right of the people involved on the issue to freedom of expression.

"We will refrain from making any statement on this, especially if the matter will potentially lead to a case. If there will be a complaint that will be filed before the IBP, we will act on it in accordance with our rules in handling a complaint against a lawyer," Largo told Sun. Star Davao.

The Addu earlier expressed its intention to file charges against Remlane who threatened its professors over the failed grade of his child. In a strongly worded statement issued Thursday, March 22, Addu president Father Joel Tabora said the school will not be "intimidated" by "parental bullying based on public office or on one's legal profession."
