Angeles lifts Ateneo's win
THE Ateneo de Davao University Blue Knights, with Marion Lawrence Angeles at the helm, secured a semifinals berth by routing Holy Child College of Davao (HCCD) Red Eagles, 89-75, in the quarterfinals of the Escandor Cup 2018 Invitational Basketball Tournament Under 17 yesterday at the Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center.
The 17-year-old Blue Knight buried four triples in the crucial period and finished with 29 points.
Ateneo, coached by Jess Evangelio, grabbed a 43-36 edge at the half and stretched its lead to 60-50 in the third.
Lance Justin Carr, who contained Red Eagles shooter Vince Petdeo Cuajao, added 16 points as Andre Nebria chipped in 14 markers.
Cuajao, on the other hand, was limited with 13 points while teammate Cayle Manlimos had 10.
"Inisip ko lang po talagang manalo," Angeles said in an interview with Sun.Star Davao yesterday.
Angeles, however, will not play in the semifinals against whoever prevails in the Davao Jones Academy-Jose Maria College showdown as he will reinforce the Davao Eagles in the upcoming Palarong Pambansa 2018 this April 15 in Vigan City.
But he still believes that team will be able to pull it off without his presence.
"The team will still stay the same kasi may system kami," Angeles, a San Beda College aspirant, said.
The St. Mary's College of Tagum, meanwhile, stopped the Philippine Academy of Sakya Davao, 8975, via overtime to also book a ticket to the semifinals set this Tuesday, April 3.
They will face the winner of the other quarterfinal match pitting Assumption College of Davao and Lamb of God Sped Academy that was still being played as of this writing.
