Climate change seminar in UPMin gathers 20 HEIs
TWENTY higher education institutions from all over Mindanao and from other sectors were represented in the “Climate Change Research: Methods, Techniques, Approaches, and Opportunities” seminar hosted by the University of the Philippines in Mindanao (UPMin) last March 26.
Chancellor Sylvia Concepcion welcomed the participants.
The topics and speakers were: “Institutional and policy landscaping for Climate Risk Management” by Dulce Elazegui of University of the Philippines Los Baños College of Public Affairs and Development (CPAf, UPLB); “Climate Change studies in Mindanao” by UP Mindanao Associate Professor of Marine Biology Cleto Nañola; “Water Security under Climate Risks: Philippine Climate Change Adaptation strategy for the agriculture sector” by Dr. Agnes Rola of CPAf, UPLB; “Mainstreaming Climate Change in curriculum development, instruction, and extension” by Dr. Maria Ana Quimbo of CPAf, UPLB; and “Climate Change challenges and opportunities for financing climatecompatible development in the Philippines” by Mr. Kairos de la Cruz of Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities. Open Forums accompanied the talks. Closing Remarks were given by Asst. Dean Marichu Obedencio of Xavier University.
The activity was a joint undertaking of Xavier University-Ateneo de Cayagan, UP Los Baños and UP Mindanao, Tra Vinhn University of Vietnam, and the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities and organized by the research project led by Catherine Roween Almaden of Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan, Dr Than Tung Diep of Tra Vinhn University of Vietnam and Dr Agnes Rola of UP Los Baños on the “Multidimensional Indicators of Adaptive Capacity of Rice Farming Households to Address Salt Water Intrusion in the Philippines and Vietnam” funded by the Collaborative Research for Young Scientists (CRYS) Program of the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research.
HEIs represented were Misamis University, Caraga State University, Western Mindanao State University, Surigao State College of Technology, University of Science and Technology of Southern Phils., University of Southern Mindanao, Mindanao State Univ.-Iligan, Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology, Southern Philippines Agri-Business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology (Spamast) Malita and Digos, Central Mindanao Univ., Davao Oriental State College of Science and Technology, Ateneo de Davao University, Philippine Women’s College of Davao, Brokenshire College, Davao Medical School Foundation, San Pedro College, University of Southeastern Phils.-Mintal, Tagum, and Obrero.
Members of the UPLB PhD in Development Studies, UP Mindanao officials Larry Digal, Jean Juanga, and Emma Bayogan, the Office of Research, the College of Science and Mathematics, the Architecture and Urban and Regional Planning programs, and Jeya Murugan of Baba’s Foundation, and barangay councilor Manuel Ortega also attended.
