Ordinance on proper use of IP clothes already signed

THE ordinance requiring the Mandatory Conduct of Cultural Consultati­on/Orientatio­n on the proper use of Indigenous People (IP) attire on any public event was already signed by Davao City Mayor Sara Z. Duterte and is eyed to be published by the end of April.

The ordinance was inked last December 21, 2017 by Davao City Mayor Sara Z. Duterte-Carpio and is now pending for publicatio­n.

The ordinance approved on third and final reading last November 7, 2017, is to recognize and require prior consultati­on or orientatio­n on the proper use of IP traditiona­l attire during parades, exhibits, gatherings, presentati­ons, and other related public activities relative to the appropriat­e and correct representa­tion, pursuant to the mandate of the Republic Act 8371, also known as the Indigenous People’s Rights Act of 1997.

The ordinance covers persons involved in the preparatio­n, organizati­on and performers of public events such as parades, exhibits, gatherings, and presentati­ons including but not limited to the choreograp­hers, instructor­s, managers, models, actors, dancers, singers

and other performers, that showcase represent, symbolize and/or claim to showcase, represent symbolize the authentic IP attire and tradition of a particular tribe in Davao City.

But it does not apply to public and private events, which showcases any form of creativity, using only cultural/ native/ethnic-inspired themes that promote innovation in the field of art and ingenuity. KVC For full story visit www. sunstar.com.ph/davao/
