I deserve better; I am not bitter

- By Sean D. Belen, FSUU Intern

HAVE you ever felt like your efforts are wasted? And all your sacrifices are being taken for granted? Like no matter what you do and whatever good things you are doing, it still seems not enough and is not well appreciated.

I'm tired of hearing the lines like "you are the one who makes your grades" and "I only compute the grades that you are giving me". Like I also question the transparency and authenticity of those lines because I think that those lines are not being applicable to my student life.

Do I have the right to question the grades that are given to me? Yes, I think so. I know my performance as a student and I know when I deserve a grade or not. I know my standing and I am working hard in my academics.

I am not the type who just gets exasperated with a certain teacher just because he/she has given me a low grade or rating. As long as I know my truth, as long as I know that I am weak in that certain area of learning, I wholeheartedly accept it. I am not the type who aims for the highest rating, all I want is a grade that is due and that's coherent with my performance.

I am a firm believer of "give credit where credit is due". As much as possible honesty and fairness should always prevail in giving grades or ratings. Let us not forget professionalism. We should not incorporate friendship and liking someone to influence our sanity in giving the proper and fitting grades to every student.

Also, sometimes one factor that makes circumstances of not giving a just grade is that teachers don't see the totality of a student's performance outside the classroom. Most especially in college that sometimes there are outcomebased group activities that the only thing they see is the performance of the student in front of them, right then in the moment of the presentation. What they see is what they're grading. The effort of the student in the planning stage and brainstorming is not being counted. And that's the saddest part.

Amidst all the injustices that are happening in your academic life, don't be tired to do good and strive hard, it is your gain and all you got to do is keep the learning. Always remember that even if everything seems unfair, the person who would stand fast and fight fair and square will make it through.
