Davraa girls futsal team stuns defending champs

- MLSA

VIGAN, ILOCOS SUR -- Joyce Semacio scored a hattrick in the 25th, 31st and 37th minute to lift Davraa secondary girls futsal team to a stunning 3-1 win over defending champion Western Visayas in yesterday's quarterfinals at the Santa Municipal Gym yesterday.

Semacio, in an interview with Sun.Star Davao at their Ilocos Sur National High School billeting quarters, said: "Go for gold na ni, kumpyansa ko nga tuloy-tuloy na (We are going after the gold, I am confident we will make it).

The Davraa futsal team, coached by Alvic Troyo of Philippine College of Technology (PCT), defeated Zamboanga Peninsula, 4-3; lost to Caraga, 4-5; routed Ilocos Region, 7-3; before upsetting Western Visayas.

Troyo said they no longer had time to scout their semifinals opponent as the playing venue is far from their quarters. The team has to travel an hour going to the venue and another hour back to their quarters.

Meanwhile, the Davraa secondary boys basketball team also stayed alive.

The Davraa Eagles, who trailed Central Visayas, rallied to force a deadlock at 78-all in the final 24 seconds.

On Davraa's possession, coach Nestor Sorrosa said Lawrence Marione Angeles took a drive but was fouled with only four seconds to go in the game. He, however, converted his two free throws for Davraa to take an 8078 edge. The University of Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers-bannered Central Visayas made an attempt to tie the match but to no avail.

Sorrosa said, "Close fight gyud. Nag-top mi sa bracket B, wala pamiy pildi (It was a close fight. We topped bracked B, we are unbeaten in three games)."

Davraa Eagles scored wins over Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, 103-51, and Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), 85-70, in their first two games.

They will play against Central Luzon at 9 a.m. today at the San Juan Gym here.
