Davao Sur's hog prod' n up 153%

DAVAO del Sur’s produced backyard hogs had declined by 65.93 percent but had increased production of commercial­lygrown hogs by 153.65 percent, as per data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

This year Davao del Sur experience­d a 65.93 percent decline on its number of backyard hogs to only 88,369 heads from its 259,364 record as of April 1, 2017. The province, however, had increased production on their commercial­ly-grown hogs by 153.65 percent to 42,631 hogs from only 16,807 hogs of the same period last year.

Hog production in Davao Region as of April 1 of this year, had grown by 2.19 percent to 895,740 heads as compared to last year’s record of 876,511 hogs.

Most of the hogs grown in the region are backyard-raised. As of April 1 of this year, there is a recorded 748,308 backyard-grown hogs in the region. This has increased by 2.65 percent as compared to the 728,976 backyard-grown hogs of the same period last year. Most of the backyard hogs produced in the region this year are from Davao Oriental with 275,889 recorded heads, followed by Davao del Norte and Davao City with 137,774 and 126,436 backyard hogs respective­ly. Compostela Valley, on the other hand, has 119,840 backyard-grown hogs.

The commercial­lygrown hogs in Davao Region have only slightly decreased to 147,432 heads only from only 147,535 in April 1 of 2017. However, with this slight increase is also the increase of commercial­ly-grown hogs from Davao del Norte
