Basketball newbies hit hard

YOUNG and aspiring cagers from seven different schools in Davao City shared the limelight at the Future Star League grassroots basketball tournament that opened on May 21.

The league, a joint program of Mark Anthony Constuctio­n and Supply (MACS) and Cherrylume, took place at the Rizal Memorial Colleges (RMC) Event Center.

Teams including the Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU), University of Immacualte Concepcion (UIC), San Pedro College (SPC), Philippine Women's College (PWC), Ford Academy of the Arts (FAA), Davao Christian High School (DCHS) and San Juan Elementary School (SJES) paraded their respective colors during the opening rites that was spearheade­d by MACS president engineer-captain Mark Anthony Cayetano and Cherryulum­e vice president Bong Tan.

The opening game was ushered by the DCHS against SPC where the former escaped the latter with 32-29. In the rising stars division, behind the heroics of John Alpapara who erupted 20 points on top of nine rebounds and five steals.

Matt Cayetano also helped propel DCHS towards victory with his four markers, two rebounds, and exceptiona­l effort on the defense.

The PWC, however, drew first blood over UIC with a 20-19 nip in the following game of the rising star division.

In the elite stars division, PWC A demolished UIC B 67-9, while PWC B survived UIC A 36-34, in the event officiated by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Davao Chapter. ABM
