Braga lauds DCNHS mural artists
DAVAO City Councilor Pilar C. Braga lauded members of art clubs from various education institutions in city which participated in the painting of large murals of indigenous peoples on the walls of the Davao City National High School.
In her privilege speech, Braga expressed delight in the participation of many students and artists in the mural project.
She said the murals remind Davaoenos of their origins as inhabitants of Mindanao.
“I am inviting the members of this council to drop by the area -- have a look-see... of the visual delight that reminds us that we are Tri-people, united and at peace with one another... The Christians, Muslims and the Lumads,” Braga said, who herself is a member of the Council of Arts and Cultured chaired by Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.
The mural project is organized by artist Rey Mujahid Millan along with the DCNHS Special Program for the Arts and Senior High School Arts and Design. The concept is aimed to remind everyone to take a look at their Mindanao ancestors and to urge residents to be grounded on the Mindanao identity without destroying the heritage and environment as the city grows very fast.
A total of 44 art students, one art group and art and design teachers of the DCNHS participated in the mural painting with the cooperation of representatives from the University of Mindanao, Ateneo de Davao University, Gama Art Group, DCNHS SPA alumni, and the DCNHS SPA Arts and Design teachers, with the guidance of Millan and Archie Oclos, a Manila-based street artist and painter whose mural depict sociopolitical issues and the plight of the Indigenous Peoples.
