Elite guards

Tight security for Jinggoy at City jail

- By Juliet C. Revita

THE elite force of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP 11) is manning the cell of the arrested top New People’s Army (NPA) leader, classified as a high-risk inmate, to prevent possible security risk.

Jail Inspector Edo Lobenia, BJMP 11 community relations service officer chief and spokesperson, said yesterday that the condition of Elizalde Cañete, alias Ka Jinggoy, allegedly a high-ranking leader, is better and tight security measures are being implemented.

“So far okay lang naman sya. No special treatment is given to him. He is classified as a high-risk inmate,” Lobenia said.

The Special Tactics and Response Team (Star Team) of BJMP 11, which is an elite tactical unit trained to perform high risk operations composed

of highly trained BJMP personnel and experts in dealing with high risks inmates, are already deployed in the facility.

They are also coordinating with other security forces including the Philippine National Police (PNP) imposing security measures within the vicinity to prevent any rescue plot.

Asked on the location of his trial, Lobenia said it will depend if he will be tried in the Hall of Justice or in Davao City Jail Court located inside the jail facility. This is to minimize the risk of transporting high-risk inmates when attending court trials. “It depends on the judge who has jurisdiction over his case. And also if magrequest si warden na sa DCJ Court magtrial,” Lobenia said.

Meanwhile, he said that only the immediate family and the lawyer of Jinggoy are allowed to visit him at the jail.

He has a standing warrant of arrest for serious illegal detention (no bail); robbery by a band; murder (no bail) for four counts; attempted murder for four counts; and a frustrated murder and alias warrant, all issued by Regional Trial Court, 11th Judicial Region.
