Age doesn’t matter; change is the answer

- By Jamille Galido Monforte, FSUU Intern

WHEN we talk about maturity, rank, status, intelligence and some other things, we somehow believe that adults are higher compared to the younger ones. We can observe this especially in applying for a job. Most companies or employers would mostly prefer an applicant who is older with experience rather than a fresh graduate.

We can also observe this thing in love. Some women prefer to marry or be with someone older than them for they believe that they will be pampered unlike the younger ones whom they have to pamper instead.

We tend to believe that older people are more knowledgeable and have more experience about things since they have lived and exist longer in this world than us, but does age have to be a standard for our decisions and perception towards these things?

I know many people who proved that the phrase “age doesn’t matter” does really matter whether it may be about love, rank, status or whatsoever.

If you’re a fan of Kdrama, you probably knew or heard about the famous song-song couple -- Song HyeKyo and Song Joong Ki. HyeKyo is older than Joong Ki by four years. Another example is the Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai. She is the youngest Nobel Prize winner at the age of 20 years old. Another example is the love story of Vic Sotto and Pauleen Luna. This couple has a 34-year age gap. These are but examples that defy the generalizations people have made.

We are all created to be different from one another. We all have our own preference, decision or choice towards something. We can’t just simply mandate people to do this for that for we have our own right and choice towards everything.

We can’t control love. We can’t control fate. We can’t control people.

I don’t really have any problem with age. I believed that all of us have our own strengths and weaknesses. Someone might be better than you at something or you might be better than someone at something. We are all created equal by God that He made sure to give each one of us a talent or something that we’re good at.

The only problem is our insecure or judgmental nature. If we are more open and understanding towards everything then the world would be a better place to live in. People are now more open to express themselves without worrying about other people’s reaction and people will be now living their lives in a happy and peaceful manner. Everything would be perfect!

You see, we are the ones who makes this world a dangerous place to live in but by changing ourselves, we can help in turning it into a better one.
