Philippine's marine life in Google's Doodle for Independence Day

Google celebrates with Philippines on its 120th Independence Day with a doodle that features its marine life.

The search engine's ninth Independence Day doodle is a tribute to the world's center of marine biodiversity being home to at least 2,000 aquatic species and long clusters of corals.

The Doodle captures the underwater depths with an image of the seabed, explored by Moorish idols (the yellow striped fishes), blue spotted stingrays, and a sperm whale. Coral reefs, which serves as habitat to these aquatic species, break the blue waters with its bright colors. The image of the marine life is wrapped in a ribbon frame in the colors of the Philippine flag.

"On June 12, visitors clicking on the Doodle on Google Philippines’ homepage will discover more about this part of Filipino heritage, and the life and abundance of the Philippine seas," Google said in a statement sent to SunStar Davao.

Aside from featuring elements of the Philippine flag, previous years’ Doodles also depicted the Pinoy jeepney, celebrated the tradition of bayanihan, and showcased the Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite, where the Philippine Declaration of Independence from Spain was declared.

Google has been coming up with fun and surprising doodles to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous artists, pioneers, and scientists. Recently, Google Philippines paid homage to esteemed Filipino artists Francisco Balagtas and Levi Celerio.
