Peñas eyeing Congress seat
DIGOS CITY - Digos City Mayor Joseph Peñas is being eyed to run for the lone seat in Congress in the 2019 midterm elections.
They will also support former Philippine National Police (PNP) general director Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa for governor after he retired as the Bureau of Corrections director.
Pe?as also confirmed that there is an ongoing negotiation that they will be on the same ticket under the ‘Hugpong ng Pagbabago’ (HNP) of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.
The HNP is now a regional political party after it was registered with Commission on Elections.
Pe?as earlier bared that he is running for governor as he is already on his last term as mayor.
But with the recent development, he opts to run for Congress instead.
“I will abide with my party’s decision if the proper time comes and I am willing to accept the challenges,” Pe?as said.
He also welcomes the idea of Dela Rosa as the party’s choice for governor in the province.
“He is very much welcome to the political battlefield in Davao del Sur. Bato is a disciplinarian, and he possesses qualities of a good leader that our province badly needed,” he said.
Pe?as became HNP’s focal person in Davao del Sur after Governor Douglas Cagas failed to join the group wherein all the provincial governors of Davao are recognized as members.
Davao Occidental Governor Claude Bautista is the concurrent vicechairman of HNP.
Majority of the mayors joined HNP in Davao del Sur.
