Families evacuate due to floodwater

-

THE Davao City Risk Reduction Management Council (CDRRMC) recorded several families in Barangay Panacan who were forced to take preemptive evacuation due to increase of water level following the continuous downpour Friday night while several motorists and commuters were left stranded due to traffic.

Based on their data, about 10:16 p.m., a flood erupted in Don Ramon, Sunrise and San Miguel in Barangay Panacan wherein three families of 15 individuals and eight families or 38 individuals, respectively, were evacuated and temporarily stayed at San Miguel Chapel when their areas were submerged by floodwaters.

The Barangay RRMC in Tibungco, Panacan, Condor and Trabmoc went to conduct monitoring and assisted the evacuation of the affected families. They conducted force evacuation to assure that the residents are safe since the floodwater rose.

After the floodwater receded, the residents were already allowed to return to their houses.

Meanwhile, the photo shared by Mary Mae Orcullo on her Facebook account showed a bunch of vehicles stuck in traffic at La Verna Hills Subdivision along C.P. Garcia Highway when the floodwater level rose in the area.

This scene has become a usual experience everytime heavy rains pour as the subdivision is positioned low between two hills, thus, the water coming from the north and south portions will go down there which would cause quick flooding.

Social media was flooded with posts and complaints because of the incident. There were reports that there were commuters who missed their flights after vehicles ahead were not able to push through since the road became impassable to small vehicles. Motorists waited hours until the water drained when the rain stopped.

Yesterday morning, few vehicles were seen in a canal having been carried by the heavy flood and strong current.

No casualties were recorded in the incident, CDRRMC said.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) issued on Friday evening thunderstorm advisory No.6 at around 10:30 p.m. of heavy rains with lightning and strong winds due to thunderstorms. JCR(For full story visit www.sunstar. com.ph/davao/)
