Coexistence

- By Amanie R. Ya’cob, Mindanao State University-Marawi intern

WHEN love hits you, it does not choose whether it fits your standards and qualifications. The person may be out of your league or already chained. Love may come to you at right time but with the wrong person or the right person at the wrong time. Love does not notify you how, when, where and whom to fall. The most mystical part about love is it does not categorize whom to love. You could feel it to whomever whether you are in the same sex or not and you have no say to it. You cannot dictate your heart not fall or to choose wisely.

This is dedicated to the victims of love who never had the say whom they should love. The victims of birth lottery that they had no choice but to live, accept, and love what is given to them and that is being part of the LGBTIQAplus Community.

They are being outcast, discriminated, and even worse killed because of their sexual preference. The struggles that they had been through and still undergoing is something that most of us would not understand that’s why it’s so easy for us to judge. The battle they fought and still fighting is something we should never belittle. We complain about silly things concerning our crushes while they are fighting themselves for their identity.

For a long time they faced so many obstacles. The inner turmoil that they had been through concealing or even trying to change themselves into ‘normal’ one and crying every night in fear that they are unusually attracted to same sex as they are. So many times they attempted to fight their sexuality but it is a natural phenomenon they could not control. “It was hell” as described by one of them, they experienced hell even on the first stage of finding themselves.

The struggle does not end there because it was only the beginning of a bigger one. Even if they already accepted themselves the society will never accept them, some even their loved once are disgusted. Being bashed and make fun of, people only see gays as clowns and lesbian as tomboys. There is a very narrow classification for them. They are most of the time not taken seriously and even their chosen partners do not last. When Manny Pacquiao harshly stated that they are worse than animal that was the lowest blow that a person can attack them and the sad part is many people agreed.

This type of society forgets the essence of humanity. The mere fact that regardless of our gender, religion, culture, race, and social status, we are all human beings; the common denominator will never be omitted however, bunch of hypocrite and self righteous people thinks that they are above just because they are within the two sexual categories that the society approved, the ‘normal’ category which are the male and female category.

Humanity as a whole does not require religion or race in order for you to be equal to the other people whether the dominant or the minority. It does not require you to be rich or beautiful in order to be respected. The minimum thing you could give is respect. Respect this people even if you cannot accept them. Respect them as a human because they are. They are not animals nor aliens nor robots that could not feel anything. They too had feelings.
