Depression isn’t a joke

- By Amanie R. Ya’cob, Mindanao State University Marawi City intern

NEVER judge persons suffering from a depression, indecisiveness, sudden change of moods, and highly sensitive feelings.

Sometimes, they are really hard to understand and decipher due to the whirling emotions they are feeling inside. The feeling of emptiness is consuming them into an abyss of dangerous thoughts. They are in a complete mess, a maze, puzzled and overwhelmed by negative feelings.

Be careful when talking to them. They are sensitive souls who could easily be triggered. One minute they are the funniest guy in a room and another minute they turn into a mute lost in daydream. You’ll come to think they are mad but the worst sort of depression is when you don’t know why, how and what are you feeling. It’s unexplainable and disturbing.

Note that this isn’t their fault, there are not in a good form and they need help. They are fighting the hardest battle within themselves. It isn’t really a joke when someone says their ‘empty’ because they really mean it. The only thing they have is a heavy heart and lighter feet. What we see is they are physically healthy but they are just air balloons in a form of human floating around.

The best thing we could do is never invalidate their feelings. They are not a bunch of over dramatic people who seek attention or recognition. Trust me when I say they don’t need pity. I’ve been there. I came to the point where going out of bed in the morning was the hardest challenge of the day, caused by lack of motivation and drained energy from fighting with the last night’s demons on my head.

Stop sleep shaming them if they sleep a lot or don’t sleep at all but never leaves the bed. It’s their way of coping up and its way better than choosing eternal sleep.

Maybe the best thing to do is to talk to them, try to understand them, make them feel they are normal. Don’t show any sign of pity. They would never want that. Give them extra time and care. Be patient to their mood swings and pessimism. What they need is words and actions that will prove their worth that they are still important and their lives still matter even if their minds insist that they are complete garbage.

These thoughts are monsters they are struggling against. They need help and support in defeating these monsters. Do empower these people because depression isn’t a joke.
