Birth lottery

- By Amanie R. Ya’cob, Mindanao State University-Marawi City intern

Birth lottery explains the idea of people who are born rich and who are born poor. It was not a choice but rather it is already given by fate to us the day we were born.

Poverty is inevitable especially if you’re born to be poor. But poverty need not be forever. It all depends on how you are going to face it whether fight it to elevate yourself or just go with the flow and die poor. For those born wealthy, it's keep it and prosper or lose it.

The world is round which means even when you are born poor it could still change but it’s hard when one is born poor. Violence and crime are two things that many resort to to fight poverty. It’s almost impossible when opportunities are beyond reach. Capitalists exploit them and the state jave for so long ignored them.

Being below the poverty line just like those who are in the squatter’s area who could possibly the ‘sikad’ driver that you see around you or worst the beggar at the over pass are among the worst of fate a birth lottery could produce. Having this status, chances are, these persons are deprived and are forgotten.

“Survival of the fittest” is their mantra every day. These people didn’t choose this kind of life; many of them are just victims of oppression and paucity. This is the nature of birth lottery where no matter how hard they fought the circumstances and fight their way out of poverty and keep your living as pure as possible sometimes it’s not enough.

It’s really admiring when one is fighting this circumstance and try to break the curse of being impoverished because that’s how life should be. Live it and win it.
