The Pacquiao effect

- By Macky Lim

JULY 15 was no ordinary Sunday for all Filipinos as Filipino Boxing legend slash Senator Manny Pacquiao defeated Argentinian Lucas Matthysse via TKO in the 7th round in an up and down Sunday showdown in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

More than 100 residents of Barangay Ma-a packed the Ma-a Elementary School around 10 o’clock in the morning.

Eyes are glued to the small projector screen installed on the stage. Faces were tensed as both boxers exchanged punches.

The crowd roared as Pacquiao’s uppercut in the third round sent Matthysse sitting on the canvas. That was when the country saw that their 39-year-old champion still has a lot of power in that punch.

When Pacquiao repeated the power punch on the fifth, the crowd went nuts and were up on their feet cheering their champ on, jeering the Argentinian.

And finally on the 7th round, the fighting Senator ends the night with an uppercut to strip Matthysse of his WBA Welterweight belt as the referee calls for a stop of the fight. The crowd were all standing, clapping, cheering, celebrating.

After nine years, Pacquiao scored once again a TKO victory that impressed millions of boxing fans.

Whenever Pacman fights, this part of the world stops, sometimes zero crime rate is recorded; it was a special Sunday for all Filipinos for it was a Pacquiao Sunday, the day we renewed our faith in our boxing champ.
