Defying expectations

- By Abigail Joyce C. Cahiwat, MSU-Marawi Intern

ASOCIETY where sizes matter and bodies are an obsession. It is a society where people are fixated to achieve even if it costs them everything. In this society, your worth is measured on how exquisite you appear and how curvy you look.

We often see on television and on social media several models, artists and stars that create the standard of perfection. This norm is having flawless skin, beautiful hair, a body size of 36-24-36, and a gorgeous face. And if we don’t meet this standard, we are an outcast to this environment. The tendencies are making people to create boundaries and a hierarchy where everyone wishes to reach. The comparison of physique is currently the obsession of today’s status quo.

Individuals go to the gym and zumba classes for exercise – and that’s good. However, it crosses to the point where they starve their way to death just to be able attain and achieve this things. It is okay to have this kind of aspiration, but we need to make sure that this doesn’t hinder us from realizing our greater purpose may it be to whatever body you have. A purpose to be one with humanity, and let’s all realize that our worth is not in any shape or face. Our worth is in us for we are created to live this life accordingly. Nevertheless, if you still want to have a go with your goal, then take baby steps because trust me, you’ll get there.

Defying the trend is good, and being you is so much better. Comparison can cause havoc, contentment brings happiness. This happiness is also something which individuals wish to fulfill. Let’s not make our lives grow weary in constantly looking at other peoples’ live. We need to look past that because we need to know that we are who we are. And we have no obligation to meet the society’s expectation.
