SHIPPING and customs stakeholders are set to convene at the 2nd Visayas Shipping Conference 2018 and 3rd Mindanao Shipping Conference 2018 to discuss trade prospects and share updates on infrastructure and policies affecting the industry.

The 2nd Visayas Shipping Conference will be held on August 2, 2018 at the Waterfront Airport Hotel & Casino in Mactan, Cebu, while the 3rd Mindanao Shipping Conference takes place on August 3, 2018 at the Waterfront Insular Davao in Lanang, Davao City. The conferences are jointly organized by PortCalls, the Philippines’ only shipping and transport guide, and Asia Customs & Trade, an online portal on customs and trade developments affecting global trade and customs compliance in Asia.

In both events, economic prospects for the near- and medium- term, and the game-changing infrastructure projects for Visayas and Mindanao, under the government’s Build Build Build program, will be discussed by National Economic and Development Authority chief economic development specialist Estrella Turingan.

Setting down rules and reminders in preparing for post-clearance audit is Bureau of Customs (BOC) assistant commissioner Atty. Vincent Philip Maronilla, head of the customs agency’s recently revived PostClearance Audit Group.

Asia Customs & Trade Editorial Board chairman and former BOC deputy commissioner for Assessment and Operations Coordinating Group Atty. Agaton Teodoro Uvero will give updates on the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act or the CMTA.

For its second run, the Visayas Shipping Conference has invited Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Michael Dino to keynote the event and talk about the administration’s major projects and programs for the region.

Joining Dino is Cebu Port Authority general manager Angelo Verdan, who will discuss the latest developments in the construction of the new Cebu container terminal; and Atty. Annabel Pulvera-Page, Oriental Port and Allied Services Corp. Legal and Corporate Development Department manager, who will talk about facility and process improvements at the Port of Cebu.

Angelia Chew, founder and managing partner of Singapore-based AC Trade Advisory Pte Ltd., is also joining the Visayas leg to reveal mega trends emerging in international trade and what they mean for businesses in the Asia-Pacific.

Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Consul Antonio Chiu, meanwhile, will talk about shippers’ perspective on challenges to trade facilitation in the Visayas, particularly in Cebu.

For the 3rd Mindanao Shipping Conference, Mindanao Development Authority Secretary Datu Abul Khayr Dangcal Alonto is the keynote speaker who will underline fresh information on the BIMP-EAGA (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines-East ASEAN Growth Area), the subregional group founded in Davao that aims to increase trade, tourism, and investments inside and outside the four member countries.

Davao International Container Terminal (DICT) vice president Bonifacio Licayan will discuss updates on Davao’s container and trade volume projections, as well as on facility developments at DICT.

Philippine Exporters' Confederation-Davao president Antonio Ferdinand Marañon will share the challenges to trade facilitation faced by shippers in Mindanao.

A presentation on “Opportunities in Building Supply Chain Capacity” will be delivered by Supply Chain Management Association of the Philippines (SCMAP) executive director Norman Adriano.
