Manila – On a scale of one to 10, President Rodrigo Duterte admitted Tuesday, August 21, that the pain he feels on a daily basis is seven.

Duterte made the admission in a speech before Visayas mayors, two days after Communist Party of the Philippines founder Jose Maria Sison claimed that the 73-year-old President was comatose.

The Chief Executive denied allegations of poor health, but said he is in constant pain because of a spinal injury he suffered from a motorcycle accident.

“Because ‘yung sa disgrasya ng motor, I have a C4 and C7 [nerve roots] na nag-impinge. That’s why I am in perpetual pain. On the... on any day, it’s 7 on a scale of 10,” he said.

A hostage-taker, who was later known to be mentally disturbed, was killed when he stabbed and tried to kill a Swat member after barging in a residence and held a family hostage yesterday, August 22 at Woodridge Park Subdivision, Barangay Maa, Davao City.

In a report provided by Police Regional Office (PRO 11) spokesperson Police Chief Inspector Milgrace Driz, it stated that at around 9:45 a.m. yesterday, the suspect, identified as Harland Ocampo Garvida, 40, single parent, and resident of Sapphire St., Block 4 Lot 30 Phase 3, NHA Bangkal, Davao City, suddenly entered the house of Allen De Vera, 47, businessman at #34 Acacia Lane Woodridge Park Subdivision.

Talomo Police Chief Inspector Ronald Lao in an interview yesterday said the suspect took someone in the house hostage. However, they refused to reveal the identity of the hostage.

“Una ato dunay nahitabo nga hostage sa sulod, ang batang babaye iyang gi-hostage, ug kining suspek nagdala og kutsilyo (There was a hostage taking in the house. The hostage was a young girl and the suspect was bringing a knife)” he said.

Lao said De Vera attacked the suspect in an effort to release the hostage. De Vera got his Gloc 9mm firearm and the two wrestled. The gun fired and hit a house helper identified as Anna Cecilia Samson Flores alias Tata, 46, married and resident of Purok 25 Times Beach.

In the middle of the skirmish, family members managed to call for police assistance. The Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) team arrived in the area while Lao talked to and negotiated with the suspect but failed.

“After one hour sa negotiations, nagmagahi ang suspek mao tong na-neutralized, kay iya naman nadunggaban ang isa ka Swat (After one hour of negotiations, the suspect refused to let the hostage go and we had to neutralize him after stabbing one of the Swat members),” Lao said.

A Swat member was wounded during the rescue operation after the suspect stabbed him successively hitting his left arm. Police authorities opened fire and shot the suspect to immobilize him.

Lao said the suspect, who was mentally disturbed, used to be a homeowner in the subdivision before his house was sold.

Driz said when the action of the suspect compromises life of the victim or the assaulting team, there must be some action to be taken.

“If there was already an imminent danger on the part of the victim and his family at the very instance he entered the house by attacking the owner with a butcher knife and took the 9mm Gloc and hit the househelper,” Driz added.

She added that the intention of the suspect was to kill anyone of the De Vera family.
