Conference seen to find ways to increase sustainability in the vegetable industry.
This year’s National Vegetable Congress seeks to address the concern in securing food supply in the country.
“This event is still related with the goal of the president to have a comfortable life for all. The role of agriculture in that context is to provide available and affordable food,” Department of Agriculture (DA) undersecretary Pompei Laviña said during the assembly on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at the Davao Convention Center.
In a message from Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, delivered by city councilor Marissa Abella during the vegetable congress, she said the vegetable industry is an important sector which creates huge labor force potential in the country.
“The sustainability of our vegetable industry is critical in maintaining and protecting food security in the country,” Duterte-Carpio said.
Duterte-Carpio added Filipinos must exhaust in conceptualizing how to manage our agricultural industry, making sure this would lead to an outcome of sustainable produces, and must support the livelihood of Filipinos living in rural communities.
She underscored the vital role of farmers in providing food supply in the country. She said creating and strengthening sustainable, safe, and inclusive vegetable industry for the Philippines will not be attained by the efforts of the government alone.
Laviña added the upcoming establishment of the Davao Food Terminal in October will also be a good avenue along with the president’s vision.
The vegetable congress will run from Tuesday, August 21 until Friday, August 24, 2018. Guests and participants of the event will also be toured along farms in the city, showcasing different agricultural farming techniques for other regional participants to witness. /
