Recycled plastics are now eyed as an effective means in protecting agricultural produce, a Davao-based manufacturing company officer said.

For Macondray Plastics Products, Inc.(MacPlas) marketing officer Joel Felongco said the impression on plastics as environmental antagonists are now shifting with the environmental advantages of using recycled plastics materials in protecting vegetable plantation.

“We have a recycling plant in Panabo, wherein we can recover waste plastics from the farm. These are farm waste already which we can use again,” Felongco said on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 during the 17th National Vegetable Congress at Davao Convention Center.

Felongco added MacPlas, as a plastic manufacturing company is complying and securing from environmental biohazards.

“Let’s say pagkatapos nila gamiton i-store nila sa ilahang MRF (Material Recovery Facility) then pwede namo i-buy back sa ilaha, tapos i-recycle as another form of plastic (Let’s say after they use it and store in their MRF, then we can buy back from them and recycle it as another form of plastic,” Felongco said.

Recycling plastics are important as Felongco underscored because this is a way in educating fellow Dabawenyos the proper manner of using plastics.

“Kase number one, agricultural plastics kay dili pareho sa household plastics nga pwede dali ra i-dispose (Because number one, agricultural plastics are not similar with household plastics which are easy to dispose),” Felongco said.

He added agricultural plastics can be used for longterm which suites also the long periods of growing plants in the agricultural sector.

“Ang pinakababa before madispose ang mulch film kay one month (It takes a month before you can dispose a mulch film). Potentially for plastic tunnels it would take five years,” Felongco said.

With the disastrous effects of climate change, Felangco said, mitigation must also be considered in order to be adept through changing times. /
