THE EXCITING JOURNEY

- BY JENNY MOLBOG-MENDOZA / Columnist mendoza.jennygrace@gmail.com

If I were to describe this man’s fashion sense, I would say, he exudes both comfort and elegance. Actor and singer Poppert Bernadas has already gone a long way career-wise, and his adaptive fashion style has helped him achieve the look of the character he is asked to portray - from his stage performances to his on screen appearances.

The Dabawenyo who once lived a very simple life here has already been reaping the fruits of his hardwork and dedication.

The talented artist, who is now in his 30s, has been doing theater for eight years now. According to him, his journey in theater is bitter-sweet because of the challenges and successes that have both happened in his life since he joined the industry.

“My first professional theater production was ‘Magsimula Ka!’ I played the lead role of Miguel, directed by Mr. Robert Seña,” he said.

For half a decade now, he has been part of the widely-watched theater production “Rak of Aegis.” He plays the role of Kenny.

“Five years na! I’m part of the original cast in 2014 at pang sixth season na namin ito; more than 300 shows na and counting,” he shared.

When asked to differentiate acting in theater and in movies or television, Poppert was quick to give out his thoughts.

“In theater production, you will be given a script and you rehearse it for two months. So given that period of time, mas lalo mong mapapaganda ang character/role mo and the moment you step on the stage, wala ng cut si direk,” he explained.

“While on screen naman, most of the time, sa mismong day mo na makukuha iyong script, kasi minsan, may mga revisions pa sila then shoot na agad iyon,” he continued. “Basically, mabilisan lalo na kapag naka-ere na iyong serye.”

His performance in “Lorenzo Musicale” has earned him the Best Actor in a Musical award by Inquirer Philippines.

Poppert is not only a good actor as he is also a talented singer. In fact, he has been a member of the famous Ryan Cayabyab Singers for years now.

In August this year, another feather has been added in his cap since he was appointed as member of the Film Development Council of the Philippines’ (FDCP) Cinema Evaluation Board.

“Last August 7, Malacañang called to tell me that President Duterte already signed my appointment,” he revealed. “I was a bit surprised, but I knew already... I’ve been waiting for it for almost two months, so I thought it’s not pushing through anymore.”

Now that he is already a member of one of the council’s boards, Poppert is committed to carry out his responsibilities to the best of his capacity.

I am excited as well to share with you that Poppert will be acting side by side with Judy Ann Santos soon in the upcoming Kapamilya teleserye “Starla.” So, watch out for this pride of Davao!
