Three woodpusher­s unbeaten after six rounds to rule their respective categories at the close of Dacs 2018 Sportsfest chess competitio­n

Top seed Kurt John Placencia, Blanche Ellyz Bongato and Gian Luis Navalta scored perfect six points to clinch the gold medals in their respective divisions at the close of the Davao Associatio­n of Catholic Schools (Dacs) 2018 Sportsfest at the St. Peter's College of Toril.

Placencia, a student of San Pedro College (SPC), emerged champion in High School boys division that drew a total of 39 players.

His teammate Jude Nathaniele Enoc pocketed the silver with 5.5 points and five-pointer University of the Immaculate Conception's (UIC's) Neil Sebastian Enoc salvaged the bronze. The latter edged 5.0 scorer Marv Denzel Rubio of Philippine Women's College (PWC's) of Davao via superior tiebreaks.

Placencia's victims were Dave Angelo Austria of Assumption College of Peñaplata, Joseph Ryan Candelaria of PWC, Matthew Kyle Tiamson and Lance Rheiniel Manalo of SPCT, Enoc of UIC, James Kurt Cruzat of Ateneo de Davao University (Addu).

Bongato of Stella Maris Academy of Davao, for her part, outclassed Daniel Umayan of Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) and Florence Faith Guevarra of Addu who each registered identical 4.5 points to grab the next two places in High School girls event.

Addu player Gian Luis Navalta also shared the spotlight as he bested John Michael Uy of Stella Maris Academy of Davao (5.0) and Felix Jake Sator of Holy Cross of Babak (4.0) to annex the Grade School boys division crown.

In the distaff side, Our Lady of Fatima Academy bet Sophia Julia Bolasco tallied 5.5 points to capture the Grade School girls gold over Praisethel Bade of Jesus and Mary Thevenet School (5.0) and Princess April Mancao of SPCT (4.5) who got the silver and bronze, respective­ly.

Top performers will advance to the Davao City Athletic Associatio­n (Dcaa) Meet 2018 that serves as qualifier for the Davraa Meet 2019. /
