Coaches clinic ends
The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Coaches Clinic Davao Region, which was attended by around 200 veteran and neophyte coaches in Davao, came to a close yesterday at the Arcadia Active Lifestyle Center.
Spearheaded by Gilas assistant coach Jong Uichico and supervised by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) executive director and commissioner Renauld ‘Sonny’ Barrios, the two-day clinic, which was basically a review of the basic fundamentals of basketball and introduction of its new terminology for coaching, has set the standards of coaching.
Uichico with Far Eastern University (FEU) coach Ryan Betia, Coach Mark Solano and Xander Gubat also demonstrated the proper drills during the training.
SBP regional director and presidential adviser for sports Glenn Escandor and SBP executive program officer Ronel Leuterio were also present.
For veteran coach Bambino Santander, head coach of Ford Academy of the Arts (FAA), the clinic might have been short but it left a significant lesson for coaches like them.
“Twenty years nako nag coach pero karon lang ko nakabalo na dapat 1 hour and a half lang diay ang training sa mga bata kay para dili sila ma-strain ug dali lang nila masabtan,” he said.
Agro Industrial Foundation College of the Philippines (AIFCP) head coach Arman Villanueva, in a separate interview, shared that the clinic was really suited for the Davao City basketball.
“Almost the same lang sa traditional coaching ang gitudlo sa clinic pero mas gi-emphasize didto ang proper drill sa defense ug offense,” he said.
Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School (PNJKIS) coach Rocky Mejos, meanwhile, said the lecture was sensible and detailed.
Davao City is the 13th region the coach’s clinic had visited. This year, SBP promised to visit 16 regions.
Barrios, however, said it will be an annual program.
“Next year when we come back to the provinces we have already visited, we might teach the same module for the new comers and move to the next level for those who already joined,” the SBP executive director said.
