Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio started her Alveo Ironman 70.3 Davao preparations but she does not want to train with her husband who is joining another relay team in the race slated here on March 24, 2019.
Sports Development Division of the City Mayor’s Office (SDD-CMO) officer-in-charge Mikey Aportadera, who guested at the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at The Annex of SM City Davao Thursday, said he chanced upon the mayor running last Tuesday morning.
“Tuesday sa buntag nianhi ko diri kay nagsugod napud ko og dagan. Natagbuan jud nako si mayor nagsugod napud sya’g iyaha (I ran around here at SM City Davao Tuesday morning and I also saw the mayor also running as a start of her Ironman preparations),” Aportadera said.
He shared that Compostela Valley Governor Jayvee Tyron Uy sent him the line-up of the Davao City’s Team Life Is Here composed of the latter, Duterte-Carpio and Taguig City Representative Pia Cayetano.
Aportadera then asked the Presidential daughter, “Mam, sigurado ka ba ani remember (Are you sure of this) it’s going to be 21 kilometers under the heat of the sun. Ni-confirm si Mam (She confirmed), `yes it’s true.’”
The city sports chief said that with Cayetano, a seasoned triathlete, doing the bike, the mayor could get a good headstart in the running stage.
“Problema man gud ang init, ana ko, `Mam pwede palandungan ka og tagaan payong’ (The problem is the heat). She is really serious about running,” said Aportadera who is part of Team Tapang at Malasakit also composed of the mayor’s husband lawyer Mans Carpio and swimming coach Vasit Venturillo.
When Aportadera suggested to Duterte-Carpio that both of their teams train together as her husband is also competing with him, “Dili jud sya kay competition daw na so ija-ija sa mi. Lingaw jud sya first time ko kita si mayor engaging in this (She does not want us to train together as it was a competition so we have to train separately. It’s really fun to see the mayor engaging in this).”
