On goodbyes

- NINA S. CUSTODIO, MD ninzcustodio@gmail.com

Ihate goodbyes. Well, it actually depends on the circumstances surrounding each farewell. There are sad goodbyes but there are ones that are said for the better right? Nevertheless we know how goodbyes are. When we think about of such, they usually carry a sad, lonely tune. No matter how much we try to make things light, adieus are said with a heavy heart. We just need to accept that.

It does not help that it’s cousins with letting go. Ugh. You know what I mean? I chuckled as I wrote these lines knowing for a fact how much most of us find it difficult to do both. Well, I do. There is something about goodbyes and letting go that says ‘fin’ with such finality that I wince at the thought as well as the memories of the times that I have had yo do both.

My week was all about saying goodbye and letting go and it sucks because I have had good news all around, when I ignore these two things. But I guess like I have always said, that is life and yes, we all have to roll with the punches, bear and grin the bad stuff and just pray we are left standing, stronger and wiser.

Sad as it is, we realize that sometimes we just need to do it. We may have no other recourse because it is what it is and the only way to move on is to do it. It is never easy but deep inside you know that it is either of two things: that it is the only thing you can do or it is the best thing you can do in a given situation.

Goodbyes can come without warning and when that happens, we have to concede no matter how much we feel bad about it. Otherwise, we often see it coming, whether we like it or not. We can pretend that it’s not there but I guess it will always demand our attention. We can fight a good fight and try to see things through, hoping that the odds will turn in our favor but if it doesn’t, we need to be prepared to accept the inevitable.

Don’t fret. It happens to everyone, being in this situation. We are made vulnerable by life’s challenges so that we can learn how to keep ourselves afloat when similar situations arise. It teaches us not only how to survive but also to know for a fact that we can survive such blows. The pain that comes with it is unavoidable but treat it as an impetus to learn life’s lessons well.

At the end of the day, we move forward. Hope for the best as you take a deep breath as you feel that stab of melancholy and loss. Life gets better, every day is a new day to see life rosier, happier, fuller!

Happy Sunday Everyone! :)
