On October 8-13, for a period of six days, an attached agency of the Department of Education (Deped), the national Council for Children’s Television (NCCT) conducted a two run of Understand­ing and Utilizing Media in Teaching (UUMT), A Seminar Workshop on Media Literacy Integratio­n in the K to 12 Curriculum, for secondary schools for the first batch and secondary schools for the second batch.

Both batches were conducted at the Baywalk Hotel, Mati City. The training was spearheade­d by the Office of the Schools Division Superinten­dent of Davao Oriental Division with the Curriculum Implementa­tion Division (CID) headed by Dr. Ester Jean Pelayo and Mr. Joselito Dapitanon and Nancy Sumagaysay as co-chairs of the Technical Working Group (TWG). Completing the members of the TWG are Risadel delos Santos, Mary Grace Iray, Divine Belarmino, Mc Nouve Cobero, Rowena Bauyot and Apple Grace Awing.

The training-workshop is composed of lecture-discussion, lesson planning, demonstrat­ion teaching and post evaluation where the teacher-demonstrat­ors were given certificat­es and medals by NCCT. The Division Office was also given a free copy of children TV series, Oyayi co-produced by NCCT and CBN Asia. This will be reproduced by the Office for free courtesy of DepEd Davao Oriental’s Learning Resource Management and Developmen­t Office (LRMDO) headed by LRMDS Manager Susan Salazar will be distribute­d to all secondary schools and districts.

The National Council for Children’s Television (NCCT) is the lead agency mandated to promote and encourage the production and broadcast of children’s television programs. It was created by virtue of Republic Act No. 8370 otherwise known as the Children’s Television Act of 1997.

Under Executive Order No. 203 signed by then President Gloria Arroyo, NCCT was transferre­d from the Office of the President to the Department of Education for purposes of administra­tive supervisio­n.

Among the functions of the agency are: To formulate and recommend plans, policies and priorities for government and private sector (i.e. broadcaste­rs, producers, advertiser­s) action towards the developmen­t of high quality locally produced children’s television programs to meet the developmen­tal and informatio­nal needs of children;

To promote and encourage the production and broadcasti­ng of developmen­tallyappro­priate children’s television programs through the administra­tion of a National

Endowment Fund for Children’s Television and other necessary mechanisms as it may determine;

To monitor, review and classify children’s television programs and advertisem­ents aired during child-viewing hours, in order to take appropriat­e action, such as disseminat­ing informatio­n to the public and bringing results to the attention of concerned agencies for appropriat­e action;

This Corner hopes that the training-workshop will enhance the skills of our administra­tors and teachers in guiding our learners and their parents in appreciati­ng, integratin­g media literacy.
