USEP's 1st, biggest basketball tourney

The University of Southeaste­rn Philippine­s (USEP) will hold its first and biggest Alumni Basketball Tournament that will tip off on November 9 at the Nograles Gym in USEP, Bo. Obrero, Davao City.

This was bared by USEP Sports Office director Dr. Jose Alther Rivera during the Davao Sportswrit­ers Associatio­n (DSA) Forum held at the Annex of SM City Davao yesterday, October 24.

Rivera said this month-long basketball tournament is organized by the USEP Sports Office in cooperatio­n with the USEP Alumni Federation under the term of federation president engineer Arman Capin. It also aims to gather the graduates of the state university while promoting the values of camaraderi­e and sportsmans­hip, said Rivera, adding: "It is also a jumpstart activity for the staging of the 2018 USEP Alumni Homecoming set on December 15." The sports director also proudly announced that 10 teams have already submitted their entries which include Cherrlyume, CGB Warriors, Engineerin­g Old Stars, St. Nicholas Maritime Review Center, Builders, Simply Gray Studio, Banawa Boyz Friends, Jaguars Diamond Knights and USEP Tagum.

Rivera, however, said the formal opening program is set on November 9 but there will be pregames on November 3 and 4. It will be a two-bracket single round robin format eliminatio­n cagefest that will be officiated by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).

The top two teams of each bracket will move forward to the crossover semifinals en-route the finals that will be played at the USEP Gymnasium.

Special awards will also be given to the most valuable player (MVP) and mythical five courtesy of the USEP Alumni Federation. /
