Bread, in all its various forms, has been the most widely-consumed food for decades. Filipinos are also fond of it and some will always have it for breakfast or during snack time. All over the world, groups of bakers and bakery owners celebrated the World Bread Day last October 16, 2018, conducting activities that would help out those underprivileged individuals.

In Davao City, a group of bakery owners made breads that are good and healthy served especially for the senior citizens in the city. Last October 1, the Davao Bakers Club, Inc. conducted the World Bread Day Kick-Off by musical presentations, zumba and of course, bread giving to the beneficiaries at People’s Park.

“Gusto naming ipakita sa iba, ipakita sa society at malaman nila na mayroon palang mga breads na healthy at pwede sa kanilang edad,” Rexcell Dacayon, Davao Bakers Club, Inc. Vice President told SunStar Davao.

“Ang Davao Bakers Club, nag-create kami ng mga breads dito sa Davao ng mga bread na healthy at pwede sa mga matatanda, bread na low-fat then low-sugar,” he added.

Almost 200 senior citizens participated on the event from nearby barangays, coordinated the by the city social service and development office.

During the event, the beneficiaries were serenaded by the Mindanao Repertory Community, a group composed of different talents from Mindanao which promotes Theatre Arts in Davao City.

Last October 13, the Davao Bakers Club conducted the livelihood program with Lumads in Marahan. On October 16, they conducted a feeding program in the school for the blind in Bago, Aplaya.

According to Dacayon the event aims to promote the consumption of bread in the community.

"The World Bread Day aims to promote the consumption of bread in the community by imparting its health benefits and raising the awareness on its vital role in one’s diet," he said.
