-

On May 19, 2019 at 2 p.m., Davao City recorded a heat index of 43 degrees Celsius (°C), according to the Heat Index monitoring of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

In their May 18 five-day forecast, Pagasa said Davao City may expect a heat index of 31.2°C to 41.1°C from May 20 to 24. The highest heat index is forecast to be on May 23 at 41.1°C.

Pagasa defines heat index as a human discomfort index that gives the “apparent” temperature or what human perceive or feel as the temperature affecting their body. Full exposure to sunshine can increase the heat index by 8°C.

The feverish heat that we experience poses a risk to our health. Getting out of the comfort of our homes in the recent weeks may not be sound as good as it is.

According to the agency, if the heat index is anywhere in between 41°C and 54°C, one is in danger to experience heat cramps and heat exhaustion. Pagasa said that heat stroke is probable with continued activity.

At 32°C to 41°C, individuals are told to be cautious of possible heat cramps and heat exhaustion.

Continuing activity could also result to heat stroke.

From 27°C to 32°C, fatigue is possible with prolonged exposure and activity while continuing activity could result heat cramps.

With this in mind, we have to take care of ourselves. Avoiding heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and hear stroke, is not a rocket science. Pagasa has provided us some tips on how we can take away from this during the hot summer months:

1. Stay indoors as much as possible, if air conditioning is not available, stay on the lowest floor out of the sunshine

2. Wear lightweight and light colored clothing. Light colors will reflect the sun’s energy.

3. Drink plenty of water regularly. The body needs water to keep cool.

4. Water is the safest liquid to drink during heat emergencies. Avoid drinking liquor because it dehydrates the body.

5. Eat small meals however eat more often. Avoid eating foods of high in protein which can increase metabolic heat.

Aside from these steps to keep our body cool, do not forget to wear eye protection and also don’t forget that sunscreen for your skin.
