DANO RULES 1ST UQCC ONLINE CHESS
DIGOS City’s Jimmy Dano topped the 1st United Queens Chess Club (UQCC) Mindanao Bullet Chess Arena online chess tournament held via lichess.org on Tuesday, April 7.
Dano, who coaches the Cor Jesu College varsity chess team, leaned on his vast experience to nail the title of the chessfest sponsored by former De La Salle University (DLSU) varsity player Rowelyn Joy Acedo of Davao City who had won several gold medals in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).
The champion, whose username is jaanNigel, amassed a total of 38 points after 17 matches in the 64-player field. He beat Nazario Ubanan of Cagayan de Oro City who grabbed the runner-up honors and Marlowe Cagulada of Davao City who salvaged the third spot.
Ubanan (ubanan-nazario) made 28 points in 11 games while Cagulada (keinan) tallied 27 points in 12 matches.
Tournament organizer Ely Acas earlier said a regular win is equivalent to two points then after two consecutive wins, a player earns four points. A draw is worth one point and a loss is zero.
Dano defeated charlesjohnfiel, van2x, MichaelJanInigo, rofaidah, obesojrdanilo, ralphdalauta31, ronaldllavanes49, charliesarigumba, Villa_roland43, offeng18, Roncar_Raffy_Tivar and ronaldllavanes49.
He also drew with Cagulada during his eighth match but lost his games to arp143, eddiejr_ resurrection, Cagulada and ronaldllavanes49 in his 16th, 11th, 10th and first assignments, respectively.
Load/Gcash worth P100, P60 and P40 were awarded to the top three placers.
Acedo, who also joined the tournament, said UQCC is the first and only established all female chess club in the Philippines.
“Since this is our first month sa club naka-decide ko mag-sponsor personally para mas makilala pa among club nationwide and international pud (I decided to sponsor an event since this is the club’s first month and I wanted to promote the club nationally and internationally),” Acedo told Sunstar Davao via Facebook late Tuesday evening.S
