PSSO OFFICIAL: CCTV’S IN DAVAO ARE FUNCTIONAL

DAVAO City Public Safety and Security Office said all closed-circuit television cameras (CCTVs) in the city are functional but weather conditions may affect their quality.

“Pag may weather disturbances may epekto siya somehow sa iyahang pagkuha, of course, gaulan, biskan kinsa ang visibility nimo lahi gyud siya kumpara sa adlaw nga klaro (If there are weather disturbances, it will affect the footage. For example, when it is raining, it will affect the quality of the video recorded),” PSSO Head Angel Sumagaysay said in an ambush interview on February 6, 2023.

He said even the lighting may affect CCTV camera footage.

“Kung ngitngit siya wala gyud siya’y ma-capture, kung dili siya well lighted medyo dili pud siya maayo (If it’s dark then we cannot capture anything, if its not well lighted then the footage is also not clear),” Sumagaysay said.

He added that it is also hard for them to get plate numbers if it is hit by light.

“Katong gisulti sa atoang investigator, ang sakyanan man gud, ang plaka pagmasigahan na siya, kahit papaano suwaw siya and may reflection gyud na siya (when the plate reflects the light from the headlight, it is hard for us to get the number),” he said.

Sumagaysay said upon real-time footage of the CCTV cameras, they can enhance its quality but once it will be downloaded, its video quality will automatically change to a lower resolution.

CCTV camera footage has been a big topic of discussion by Dabawenyos following the recent hit-and-run incident on January 26 along Tulip Drive, McArthur Highway in Davao City that killed a 22-year-old woman. The CCTV footage was claimed to be of low quality, which made some to question the reliability of the installed CCTVs in the city.

Meanwhile, Sumagaysay said the city has roughly 200 CCTVs and all of them are of good quality. He added that the city government also plans to install more upgraded CCTVs, especially in the North and South bound areas to ensure the safety and security in the city.
