UIC SCIENCE RESOURCE CENTER: A FULL-SERVICE LABORATORY
THE University’s Science Resource Center (SRC) has been serving as a full-service laboratory for almost 29 years since its formal inauguration in 1995. Located at the University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC) – Fr. Selga main campus in Davao City, the SRC offers physical, chemical, pharmaceutical, and microbiological testing and research facilities. Staffed by licensed professionals, including chemists, pharmacists, medical technologists, food technologists, and chemical technicians, the SRC provides technical assistance and extensive handson training to UIC science faculty and students.
The SRC is equipped with state-of-the-art research instruments, such as the Simultaneous Thermal Analyzer – Fourier Transform Infrared (STA-FTIR) spectroscope, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Gas Chromatograph – Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS), High-Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC), and Inductively Coupled Plasma – Optical Emission Spectroscope (ICP – OES), among others. These sophisticated equipment enable researchers to conduct advanced analyses and experiments.
Recognized by the DENR (Department of Environment and Natural Resources) as an environmental laboratory, accredited by the DOH (Department of Health) as a water testing facility, and authorized by the PRC (Professional Regulations Commission) Board of Chemistry as a chemical laboratory, the SRC offers professional analytical services to external clients at nominal fees. Its capabilities extend to analyzing various samples, encompassing agricultural, food, water, ores, pharmaceuticals, and more.
Apart from laboratory testing, the SRC actively involves itself in in-house, multi-agency/ collaborative, and externally funded research on health and the environment. Notably, the center collaborates with member agencies of HELP (Hydrology for Environment, Life, and Policy) – Davao Network under UNESCO to study the vulnerability of urban water systems in Davao City and identify ways to mitigate the effects in floodprone areas. Moreover, the SRC partners with micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to ensure the safety and quality of their innovative foods and products.
To further enhance its capabilities, the SRC is currently building its expertise in microplastics research with experts from PUM - The Netherlands. Through a collaboration that began in August 2023, the SRC received remote coaching and, more recently, a two-week on-site visit from a PUM senior expert from January 15 to 26, 2024. This engagement focuses on microplastic research using light microscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, and SEM.
Clients of the UIC-SRC can expect prompt service, fair prices, and a helpful staff committed to meeting their needs. /
