UNIT 1, UNIT 6 SPIKERS EARN DAVRAA BERTHS

DAVAO City National High School (DCNHS)-Unit 1 and Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU)-Unit 6 clinched gold medals in the recently concluded Davao City Athletic Associatio­n (Dcaa) Meet 2024 volleyball competitio­n held at DCNHS covered court.

In the secondary boy’s division, Unit 1 spanked Rizal Memorial Colleges (RMC)-Unit 5 (Private Schools Athletic Associatio­n), 25-22, 25-19, 25-16, in the secondary boys’ division behind the heroics of most valuable player (MVP) and best scorer John Oracion.

Unit 5 settled for the silver medal while AdDU-Unit 6 (Davao Associatio­n of Catholic Schools) outclassed Doña Carmen Denia National High School (DCDNHS)-Unit 3, 33-31, 22-25, 27-25, to salvage the bronze.

Unit 1 also relied on Julian Jeff Mata, Ezer Jake Regidor, and Louisse Gabrielle Recaido who were hailed the best libero, best setter, and best server, respective­ly.

Unit 5’s special awardees included best attacker Justine Castro and best blocker Elpidio Bustria Jr.

In the secondary girls division, JC Velasquez-coached AdDU-Unit 6 secured the gold by beating arch-rival DCNHS-Unit 1, 25-22, 25-23, 26-24.

AdDU Lady Blue Knights Maria Lianne Sanchez and Samantha Louise Jimenez led the charge for Unit 6. Sanchez romped away with the MVP honors while Jimenez claimed the best scorer and best attacker titles.

Unit 1’s special awardees were the best blocker Ma. Zaicy Bless Ogwon, best libero Renalie Remedios, and best server

Jasmine Gelaga.

In the elementary category, MVP awardee Zania Mariel Bejerano-led Kabacan Elementary School (KES)-Unit 1 bounced back from a first-set loss to overcome Sirawan Beach Elementary School (SBES), 23-25, 25-20, 25-11, securing the girls volleyball gold.

Matina Central Elementary School (MCES)-Unit 3 annexed the elementary boys’ volleyball gold by surviving past KES-Unit 1, 31-29, 25-17, in their championsh­ip match. MCES player Yancy Francis Callejo went home with the MVP award.

Dcaa champion teams, according to Department of Education (DepEd) Davao City sports officer Deony Ferolino, will advance to the Davao Region Athletic Associatio­n (Davraa) Meet 2024 set on April 1 to 7 in Davao City.
