FACTS ABOUT HAND, FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE (HFMD)

-

Hand, foot and mouth disease or HFMD is a highly contagious disease which is usually confused with the foot-mouth disease of cattle, sheep and swine. These two diseases are not related with each other as they are caused by different viruses. HFMD is caused by Enterovirus which commonly affects infants, toddlers and children.

This disease can be spread through contact with infected persons saliva, stool and respiratory secretions. The symptoms include fever, poor appetite, sore throat, headache and irritability. Red blisters in the mouth and red rashes on the hands and soles of feet may show up later.

In most cases, this infection will go away without treatment in seven to ten days. But it is best to seek a doctor for certain treatment to help ease symptoms. It may include prescription of topical ointment to soothe blisters and reduce the pain of mouth sores. Over the counter medication like Paracetamol or Ibuprofen can relieve the symptom of headache and fever.

Home treatment can lessen HMFD symptoms. Taking cold foods such as ice cream and sherbet can ease the pain of mouth sores. They can also sip or suck ice and popsicles. Drinking plenty of water and liquids may prevent dehydration. Eating soft foods or easy to swallow foods give the person infected nourishment for fast recovery. More over, gargling with warm water and salt can relieve sore throat. While avoidance of citrus fruits, soda, spicy and salty foods may irritate and worsen the pain brought by the blisters in the mouth

Practicing good hygiene is the best defense against HMFD together with regular hand washing. It is also important to regularly clean and disinfect common surface area at your home. The habit of disinfecting or cleaning with diluted solution of bleach and water can help control the spread. Items such as utensils and linens used by the infected person should be separated and disinfected immediately. References: www.cdc.gov/www.medicinet.com/www.mayoclinic.com
